The Holy Spirit - Session 4 - Symbols of the Holy Spirit

The Church of Divine Guidance (CDG) Sunday morning adult bible study group is doing a study of The Holy Spirit. The study will look at who the Holy Spirit is, His role in the Trinity, His interaction with man, His role in and after man's salvation. This is an intense study of the Holy Spirit in scripture. We are using the bible as our primary reference resource. These posts are my notes for each session. Please study with us. You can participate by asking your questions or making comments below. We welcome your thoughts, questions, comments, and prayers

Here are some of the things we’ve discussed and studied so far in our series on the Holy Spirit.

We’ve talked about Who the Holy Spirit is as a part of the Godhead the Trinity; we’ve looked at attributes that show that He’s a person, He has intelligence, feelings, a will, He prays, He does miracles,  He can be lied to, He can be insulted, He teaches and He directs.   We’ve discussed the attributes that prove that He’s God;  He’s omnipotent (all powerful). omnipresent (present everywhere), and He’s omniscient (all knowing)

Last week we looked at some of the names of the Holy Spirit.  The one’s we talked about last week last week were Author of Scripture, Comforter / Counselor / Advocate, Convictor of Sin, Deposit / Seal / Earnest/Guarantee, Guide, Indweller of Believers, Intercessor, Spirit of Truth, and Spirit of God / the Lord / Christ.
We are going to start this week’s study with three more names for the Holy Spirit in scripture.

Spirit of Life:

The phrase “Spirit of life” means the Holy Spirit is the one who produces or gives life, not that He initiates salvation, but rather that He imparts newness of life. When we receive eternal life through Christ, the Spirit provides the spiritual food that is the sustenance of the spiritual life. Here again, we see the Trinity at work. We are saved by the Father through the work of the Son, and that salvation is sustained by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:2 (NKJV)2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

Teacher:

Jesus promised that the Spirit would teach His disciples “all things” and bring to their remembrance the things He said while He was with them. The writers of the New Testament were moved by the Spirit to remember and understand the instructions Jesus gave for the building and organizing of the Church, the doctrines regarding Himself, the directives for holy living, and the revelation of things to come.

John 14:26 (NLT)  But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

1 Corinthians 2:13 (NKJV)13  These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

Witness:

The Spirit is called “witness” because He verifies and testifies to the fact that we are children of God, that Jesus and the disciples who performed miracles were sent by God, and that the books of the Bible are divinely inspired. Further, by giving the gifts of the Spirit to believers, He witnesses to us and the world that we belong to God.

Romans 8:16 (NKJV)  The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

Hebrews 2:4 (NKJV  God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

Hebrews 10:15-16 (NLT)  And the Holy Spirit also testifies that this is so. For he says,16  “This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the LORD: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”

Now let's look at the symbols of the Holy Spirit in scripture.

Symbols of the Holy Spirit

  • Dove,
  • Fire,
  • Wind
  • Water.
  • Oil
  • Cloud

Each one communicates something different about the Holy Spirit.

One word of caution.  When looking at a symbol, we have to be careful to make sure of the context. Much like the warning that I often give you to read and consider the context of what you read.  It's dangerous to take things out of context.  That's what false teachers often do and it can result in heresy.    For example, even though the Holy Spirit is identified with a dove in

Matthew 3:16 (NLT)  After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him.
It would be a mistake in interpretation  to see the Holy Spirit in every place a dove is referred to in the Bible.

For example

Genesis 8:8 (NLT)8  He also released a dove to see if the water had receded and it could find dry ground.
We shouldn’t interpret that Noah was sending out the Holy Spirit.

Dove

The dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit communicates beauty, gentleness, and peace.

We already looked at Matt 3:16.  This same event is recorded in all of the the gospels;

Mark 1:10 (NLT)10  As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove.

Luke 3:22 (NLT)22  and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”
John 1:32 (NLT)32  Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him.

Fire

Another symbol of the Holy Spirit is fire. In the Bible, fire can communicate the Lord’s

  • Presence Exodus 3:2 (NLT)2  There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up.
  • Shekinah glory (The word shekinah does not appear in the Bible, but the concept clearly does. The Jewish rabbis coined this extra-biblical expression, a form of a Hebrew word that literally means "he caused to dwell," signifying that it was a divine visitation of the presence or dwelling of JEHOVAH God on this earth. More simply put it is  the visible manifestation of the presence of God.) Numbers 9:15 (NLT)15  On the day the Tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered it. But from evening until morning the cloud over the Tabernacle looked like a pillar of fire. Ezekiel 1:4 (NLT)4  As I looked, I saw a great storm coming from the north, driving before it a huge cloud that flashed with lightning and shone with brilliant light. There was fire inside the cloud, and in the middle of the fire glowed something like gleaming amber.

  • Purification 1 Peter 1:7 (NLT)7  These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
  • Judgment Leviticus 10:2 (NLT)2  So fire blazed forth from the LORD’s presence and burned them up, and they died there before the LORD.  Hebrews 12:29 (NLT)29  For our God is a devouring fire.

But the symbol fire for the Holy Ghost that is most remembered or thought of by Christians is in Acts 2.

Acts 2:1-4 (NLT)1  On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place.
2  Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.3  Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.4  And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

1 Thessalonians 5:19 (NKJV)19  Do not quench the Spirit.

We looked at this verse in talking about the attributes that show that the Holy Spirit is a person who has feelings that can be hurt.  We can also say that quenching the Spirit is like throwing water on a fire.  That may be the intent of those who say don’t stop people when they are praising God, or some long winded preachers say don’t quench the Spirit when they can’t figure out how to stop their sermon jk

Wind

The Greek word for Spirit, which is pneuma (pnyoo'-mah) can also be translated as breath or wind.

Go to Acts 2:2 again Acts 2:2 (NKJV)2  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Remember when Jesus was talking to Nicodemus about being born again and Nic asked how is that possible?

John 3:8 (NLT)8  The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”

The image of wind communicates that the Holy Spirit is powerful, invisible, and blows where He intends to blow.

Water
Jesus makes this connection at the Feast of Tabernacles, one of the annual feasts that was required under the Law of Moses.  Jesus said this on the last day of the feast.

John 7:37-39 (NLT)37  On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!38  Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”39  (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

As physical freshwater is needed for physical life, the living water of the Holy Spirit is needed for spiritual life.

Oil

Anointing with oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit uniting us with Jesus, the Messiah, the Anointed One.

Acts 10:38 (NLT)38  And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Cloud
The cloud speaks to us not only of the Holy Spirit's guidance and leading, but of His faithfulness as well.  As in the case of the manna (a type of Christ) no matter how much the Israelites sinned, no matter how much they grumbled and complained, the cloud was never removed from them. It was always there to lead them and to protect them from the harsh elements of wilderness life.

Exodus 13:21-22 (NLT)21  The LORD went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night.22  And the LORD did not remove the pillar of cloud or pillar of fire from its place in front of the people.

Just as we were talking about in our first session when we said that the Holy Spirit’s feelings could be hurt but even if we did grieve the Holy Spirit He still wouldn’t leave us because He is as we learned in the names of the Holy Spirit He is our Deposit/Seal/Guarantee/Ernest.

Ephesians 1:13-14 (NLT)13  And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.14  The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.

I want to read this from Charles Spurgeon about the symbols and names for the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:4
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost.
Rich were the blessings of this day if all of us were filled with the Holy Ghost. The consequences of this sacred filling of the soul it would be impossible to overestimate. Life, comfort, light, purity, power, peace; and many other precious blessings are inseparable from the Spirit's benign presence. As sacred oil, He anoints the head of the believer, sets him apart to the priesthood of saints, and gives him grace to execute his office aright. As the only truly purifying water He cleanses us from the power of sin and sanctifies us unto holiness, working in us to will and to do of the Lord's good pleasure. As the light, He manifested to us at first our lost estate, and now He reveals the Lord Jesus to us and in us, and guides us in the way of righteousness. Enlightened by His pure celestial ray, we are no more darkness but light in the Lord. As fire, He both purges us from dross, and sets our consecrated nature on a blaze. He is the sacrificial flame by which we are enabled to offer our whole souls as a living sacrifice unto God. As heavenly dew, He removes our barrenness and fertilizes our lives. O that He would drop from above upon us at this early hour! Such morning dew would be a sweet commencement for the day. As the dove, with wings of peaceful love He broods over His Church and over the souls of believers, and as a Comforter He dispels the cares and doubts which mar the peace of His beloved. He descends upon the chosen as upon the Lord in Jordan, and bears witness to their sonship by working in them a filial (the love orfa parent for their child)  spirit by which they cry Abba, Father. As the wind, He brings the breath of life to men; blowing where He listeth He performs the quickening operations by which the spiritual creation is animated and sustained. Would to God, that we might feel His presence this day and every day.

Next week we are going to start looking at the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament.  I want to read something that I came across when doing some research on the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament.

The Holy Spirit - Session 3 - Names of the Holy Spirit in Scripture

...he saw the Spirit of God coming down
on him as a dove
The Church of Divine Guidance (CDG) Sunday morning adult bible study group is doing a study of The Holy Spirit. The study will look at who the Holy Spirit is, His role in the Trinity, His interaction with man, His role in and after man's salvation. This is an intense study of the Holy Spirit in scripture. In our first two sessions we’ve talked about who the Holy Spirit is and we’ve looked at attributes that show that He’s a person, He has intelligence, feelings, a will, He prays, He does miracles (humans can’t do this), He can be lied to, He can be insulted, He teaches and He directs.   Last week we looked at attributes that show that He’s God.

Names of the Holy Spirit in Scripture

This week we are going to look at some of the names of the Holy Spirit in scripture

Author of Scripture

The Spirit moved the authors of all 66 books to record exactly what He breathed into their hearts and minds. One person said, “As a ship is moved through the water by wind in its sails, so the biblical writers were borne along by the Spirit’s impulse.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (HCSB)16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness,17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 1:20-21 (HCSB)20 First of all, you should know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation,21 because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

Comforter / Counselor / Advocate

The words comforter, counselor, and advocate are all translations of the Greek word parakletos, from which we get “Paraclete,” another name for the Spirit. Jesus promised to send the Spirit to comfort, console, and guide those who belong to Christ.

Isaiah 11:2 (HCSB) The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him— a Spirit of wisdom and understanding, a Spirit of counsel and strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

John 14:16 (NLT) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.

John 15:26 (ASV) But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall bear witness of me:

John 16:7 (HCSB) Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.

Convictor of Sin

The Spirit applies the truths of God to men’s own minds in order to convince them by fair and sufficient arguments that they are sinners. He does this through the conviction in our hearts that we are not worthy to stand before a holy God, that we need His righteousness, and that judgment is certain and will come to all men one day. Those who deny these truths rebel against the conviction of the Spirit.

John 16:7-11 (HCSB)7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.8 When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment:9 About sin, because they do not believe in Me;10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

Deposit / Seal / Earnest/Guarantee

The Holy Spirit is God’s seal on His people, His claim on us as His very own. The gift of the Spirit to believers is a down payment on our heavenly inheritance, which Christ has promised us and secured for us at the cross. It is because the Spirit has sealed us that we are assured of our salvation. No one can break the seal of God. Remember once saved, always saved.

2 Corinthians 1:22 (HCSB) He has also sealed us and given us the Spirit as a down payment in our hearts.

2 Corinthians 5:5 (HCSB) And the One who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment.

Ephesians 1:13-14 (HCSB)13 When you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed in Him, you were also sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.14 He is the down payment of our inheritance, for the redemption of the possession, to the praise of His glory.

Guide

Just as the Spirit guided the writers of Scripture to record truth, so does He promise to guide believers to know and understand that truth. God’s truth is “foolishness” to the world, because it is “spiritually discerned”

Those who belong to Christ have the indwelling Spirit who guides us into all we need to know in regard to spiritual matters. Those who do not belong to Christ have no “interpreter” to guide them to know and understand God’s Word.

John 16:13 (HCSB) When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.

1 Corinthians 2:14 (HCSB) But the unbeliever does not welcome what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it since it is evaluated spiritually.

Indweller of Believers

The Holy Spirit resides in the hearts of God’s people, and that indwelling is the distinguishing characteristic of the regenerated person. From within believers, He directs, guides, comforts, and influences us, as well as producing in us the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). He provides the intimate connection between God and His children. All true believers in Christ have the Spirit residing in their hearts.

Romans 8:9-11 (HCSB)9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God lives in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.10 Now if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you. -

Ephesians 2:21-22 (HCSB)21 The whole building, being put together by Him, grows into a holy sanctuary in the Lord.22 You also are being built together for God’s dwelling in the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (HCSB)19 Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,20 for you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.

Intercessor

One of the most encouraging and comforting aspects of the Holy Spirit is His ministry of intercession on behalf of those He inhabits. Because we often don’t know what or how to pray when we approach God, the Spirit intercedes and prays for us. When we are oppressed and overwhelmed by trials and the cares of life, He comes alongside to lend assistance as He sustains us before the throne of grace.

Romans 8:26 (HCSB) In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings.

Those groanings are not speaking in tongues, but that's another study.  Let's just leave it there for today's study.

Revealer / Spirit of Truth

Jesus promised that, after the resurrection, the Holy Spirit would come to “guide you into all truth.” Because of the Spirit in our hearts, we are able to understand truth, especially in spiritual matters, in a way that non-Christians cannot. In fact, the truth the Spirit reveals to us is “foolishness” to them, and they cannot understand it. But we have the mind of Christ in the Person of His Spirit within us.

John 14:17 (HCSB) He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive Him because it doesn’t see Him or know Him. But you do know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you.

John 16:13 (HCSB) When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.

1 Corinthians 2:12-16 (HCSB)12 Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who ⌊comes⌋ from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God.13 We also speak these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things to spiritual people.14 But the unbeliever does not welcome what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it since it is evaluated spiritually.15 The spiritual person, however, can evaluate everything, yet he himself cannot be evaluated by anyone.16 For who has known the Lord’s mind, that he may instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Spirit of God / the Lord / Christ

These names remind us that the Spirit of God is indeed part of the triune godhead and that He is just as much God as the Father and the Son. He is first revealed to us at the creation, when He was “hovering over the waters,” denoting His part in creation, along with that of Jesus who “made all things” We see this same Trinity of God again at Jesus’ baptism, when the Spirit descends on Jesus and the voice of the Father is heard.

Matthew 3:16 (HCSB) After Jesus was baptized, He went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on Him.

2 Corinthians 3:17 (HCSB) Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

1 Peter 1:11 (HCSB)11 They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when He testified in advance to the messianic sufferings and the glories that would follow.

We're out of time today.  We'll finish next week with more names of the Holy Spirit in scripture.   We will also identify the symbols of the Holy Spirit in scripture.  I'll give you a little preview.

  • Dove
  • Fire
  • Water

Review

Last week when we started our study on the Holy Spirit we first asked, Who is the Holy Spirit?

We said that He is a person not a vague, ethereal shadow, nor an impersonal force. He is a person equal in every way with God the Father and God the Son. He is considered to be the third member of the Godhead or the Trinity.  We said that his role as a member of the Trinity, in the plan for redemption, He sees to it that every person feels a call toward God's saving grace.

John 14:26 (NLT) But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

John 16:5-8 (NLT)5 “But now I am going away to the One who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.6 Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you.7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. (Emphasis mine)

The Father designed and organized how mankind would be redeemed, the Son carried out the plan. The Holy Spirit sees to it that every person feels a call toward God's saving grace.

The Holy Spirit has attributes that only a person could have. He has intelligence, feelings, a will, He prays, He does miracles (humans can’t do this), He can be lied to, He can be insulted, He teaches and He directs.

There are a couple of attributes we discussed last week that I want to spend a little more time on today.

The first is that "The Holy Spirit Has Feelings"

Last week we said that we can hurt the Holy Spirit’s feeling, or grieve Him. How? Through dependency on self, pride, selfishness, distrust, worry, fear, anger, resentment, unforgiveness, hatred and similar self-centered, negative actions. Although the Holy Spirit can be grieved he will never leave you because He is our seal, our guarantee.

Ephesians 4:30-32 (HCSB)30 And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by Him for the day of redemption.31 All bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander must be removed from you, along with all malice.32 And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.

Here’s another scripture about grieving the Holy Spirit, this one from the Old Testament.

Isaiah 63:10 (HCSB) But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit. So He became their enemy ⌊and⌋ fought against them.

Isaiah is writing about the rebellion of Israel in their worshiping of idols and the wickedness that caused them to go into captivity. This verse is actually part of a sermon in Isaiah in which Israel is pleading for help, based on God’s past mercies.

The Spirit has feeling and emotions. Here is something from one of the reading plans that I did for this study.

For a time, whenever I read that we are not to grieve the Holy Spirit, I thought that was a bit of an exaggeration. It almost seems sacrilegious to say that I could grieve God. Who am I to have such power over the Spirit? That doesn't seem right. In fact, it even seemed wrong to say that God has feelings; for some reason I felt it belittled Him.

I struggled with these thoughts for a while until I finally realized where they were coming from. In our culture, having feelings or emotions is equated with weakness. This is a lie that is deeply ingrained in many of us.

God created feelings. Sure, like anything else, they can be misused and abused. But the intent and purpose of feelings came from God. Since He created emotions, why is it difficult to believe that He Himself has emotions? The Spirit is grieved when there is a breach in relationship, whether it be relationship with God or relationship with other people. When we are disunified, unloving, hateful, jealous, gossipy, etc., that is when we grieve the Spirit of God. And since He is the creator of emotions, I believe that the Spirit grieves more deeply than we can even understand.

How do you respond when you hear this? Does it bother you? When was the last time you were saddened because your sin pained the Holy Spirit?

I believe that if we truly cared about the Holy Spirit's grief, there would be fewer fights, divorces, and splits in our churches. Maybe it's not due to a lack of belief but rather a lack of concern. I pray for the day when believers care more about the Spirit's grief than their own. In fact, I pray that some of you readers would be broken over the grief you've placed on the Holy Spirit. So broken that you actually go and resolve any conflicts you have with other believers.

The other attribute that I want to talk about again today is that He can be insulted

Hebrews 10:26-29 (HCSB)26 For if we deliberately sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.28 If anyone disregards Moses’ law, he dies without mercy, based on the testimony of two or three witnesses.29 How much worse punishment do you think one will deserve who has trampled on the Son of God, regarded as profane the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

Deliberate sin is a rejection of the sacrifice of Jesus and to be honest a believer can’t be guilty of this because remember if your salvation was authentic then it is permanent. Deliberate sin The threefold charge follows: (1) contempt for Christ in the thought of trampling under foot; (2) rejecting the blood-bought covenant as worthless and unholy; (3) despising the person and work of the Holy Spirit.

A deliberate rejection of the cross by one who knows the way leaves God with no alternative. When mercy is rejected, judgment must fall. - The Wycliffe Bible Commentary.

Many people who believe that you can, in fact, lose your salvation through willful sin use this verse. So let me see if we can’t clear this up.

The verses we just read warns against the sin of apostasy.

Apostasy is an intentional falling away or defection. Apostates are those who move toward Christ, right up to the edge of saving belief, who hear and understand the Gospel, and are on the verge of saving faith, but then reject what they have learned and turn away. These are people who are perhaps even aware of their sin and even make a profession of faith. But rather than going on to spiritual maturity, their interest in Christ begins to diminish, the things of the world have more attraction to them rather than less, and eventually they lose all desire for the things of God and they turn away. The Lord illustrated these types of people in the second and third soils of Matthew 13:1-9,18-23. These are those who “receive with joy” the things of the Lord, but who are drawn away by the cares of the world or turned off by difficulties they encounter because of Christ.
John tells us that “No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him and he cannot sin, because he is born of God” (1 John 3:9).

Apostates have knowledge, but no application of that knowledge. They can be found in the presence of the light of Christ, mostly in the church, among God’s people. Judas Iscariot is the perfect example—he had knowledge but he lacked true faith.

Having turned his back on the truth, and with full knowledge choosing to willfully and continually sin, the apostate is then beyond salvation because he has rejected the one true sacrifice for sins: the Lord Jesus Christ. If Christ’s sacrifice is rejected, then all hope of salvation is gone. To turn away willfully from this sacrifice leaves no sacrifice; it leaves only sin, the penalty for which is eternal death. This passage is not speaking of a believer who falls away, but rather someone who may claim to be a believer, but truly is not. Anyone who apostatizes is proving he never had genuine faith to begin with. - Read more:http://www.gotquestions.org/Hebrews-10-26.html#ixzz3c3ZX0fNC

Today's Study

Now let’s continue with the attributes of the Holy Spirit, identified in scripture, that show that He is a person and not a “thing” or an “it”. There are only two more:

He teaches and directs

John 14:26 (HCSB) But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit—the Father will send Him in My name—will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.

The teaching that Jesus did before He was crucified presented a new way of living in accordance with the way God wanted man to relate to Him and to each other but it wasn’t complete. It was going to be completed by the coming of the Holy Spirit. His ministry to believers would be to teach

John 16:5-12 (HCSB)5 “But now I am going away to Him who sent Me, and not one of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.8 When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment:9 About sin, because they do not believe in Me;10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.

He gives directions

Acts 8:29 (HCSB) The Spirit told Philip, “Go and join that chariot.”

Romans 8:14 (HCSB) All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons.

The Spirit does the leading or directing

Again the attributes of the Holy Spirit, that only a person can have, are:

  • Intelligence,
  • Feelings,
  • A will,
  • He prays,
  • He does miracles,
  • He can be lied to,
  • He can be insulted,
  • He teaches
  • He directs.
You may be able to think of others and if you do let’s add them to the list but remember you need to back it up with scripture. That way we don’t ever fall into the trap of seeing the Holy Spirit as an impersonal force instead of a person?

The Holy Spirit is a Person but He is also God

As we see the Holy Spirit has attributes that only a person can have but we have also said that he is God. As God He has attributes that only God has.

  • Omnipotent
  • Omnipresent
  • Omniscient

These are theological words that essentially mean that the Spirit is

All-powerful - Omnipotent

Zechariah 4:6 (HCSB) So he answered me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by strength or by might, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of Hosts.

Present everywhere - Omnipresent

Psalm 139:7-10 (HCSB)7 Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?8 If I go up to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.9 If I live at the eastern horizon ⌊or⌋ settle at the western limits,10 even there Your hand will lead me; Your right hand will hold on to me.

All-knowing - Omniscient

1 Corinthians 2:10 (HCSB) Now God has revealed ⌊these things⌋ to us by the Spirit, for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

These are some of His attributes that we will never fully grasp as human beings. Though we will never be able to perfectly articulate or completely understand these attributes, sort of like explaining the Trinity, these aspects of the Spirit lead us to praise, even with imperfect words and incomplete understanding!

Names of the Holy Spirit in Scripture

We spent so much time in review and discussion of apostasy that we only had time for one of the names of the Holy Spirit.

Author of Scripture:

Next week we will continue with names of the Holy Spirit in scripture. We may be able to start on the symbols of the Holy Spirit in scripture, After we finish with the names and symbols we will start studying the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. Christians spend most of our time talking about the Holy Spirit from the standpoint of Jesus' telling his disciples that He is sending the Comforter, and then the Holy Spirit's coming on the Day of Pentecost, how we are filled with the Holy Spirit and how the He guides us. However as we said from the very beginning the Holy Spirit is God so He was there during creation, He was revealed throughout the writings of the Old Testament, and there were instances where He fell on people. One example is:

1 Samuel 10:9-10 (HCSB) 9 When Saul turned around to leave Samuel, God changed his heart, and all the signs came about that day. 10 When Saul and his attendant arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets met him. Then the Spirit of God took control of him, and he prophesied along with them.
